Distinctive elevation banding: foothill oak woodland → ponderosa-pine / mixed-conifer → red fir → subalpine whitebark pine → alpine. Mt. Whitney (14,505 ft) anchors the southern crest; Lake Tahoe sits at the northern transition. Giant sequoia groves at mid-elevation are the headline endemics.
