Tips
General gardening guidance
These notes are the public guidance layer that can later connect to specific plants, regions, and layout warnings.
Start with the site
Light, water, access, and mature size matter more than a pretty plant list.
Watch how many hours of direct sun the space receives.
Notice where water lingers after rain.
Leave access for harvesting, pruning, and seasonal cleanup.
Place by mature size
A new garden often looks sparse in year 1 because it is making room for year 3.
Use spacing as the default grid diameter.
Keep tall plants from shading low sun-lovers.
Repeat a few reliable plants instead of collecting one of everything.
Water for establishment
Most failures happen before roots have expanded into the surrounding soil.
Water deeply after planting.
Check moisture below the surface before watering again.
Shift from frequent watering to deeper, less frequent watering as plants establish.
Plan seasonal interest
A strong bed has a reason to exist in more than one month.
Mix foliage, bloom, seedheads, and structure.
Keep some winter forms standing where they add texture.
Use annuals and herbs as flexible seasonal fillers.
