A native eastern-US deciduous shrub — 'Annabelle' is a sterile-flowered cultivar of smooth hydrangea — with very large white snowball blooms in summer. Blooms on new wood so spring frost cannot destroy the flower display, and serves as the larval host for the hydrangea sphinx moth.

'Annabelle' is grown for its showy white sterile flower clusters — the spherical mophead heads that make the cultivar famous are composed of sterile florets that produce no viable seed regardless of pollination. The cultivar persists only through vegetative propagation. The wild Hydrangea arborescens species (the parent of 'Annabelle') does produce fertile flowers and seed; sterile-flowered cultivars have been selected specifically for the showier non-fertile form.

All parts of Hydrangea arborescens contain cyanogenic glycosides (hydrangin and related compounds) that release small amounts of cyanide when chewed or digested. Ingestion by humans typically causes gastrointestinal distress (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) rather than life-threatening cyanide poisoning, but the plant is not safe to eat and is dangerous to small pets and curious children. Decorative use only.
