The Eastern Cascades forests cover the rain-shadow east-slope of the Cascade Range in central Oregon and Washington — sharply drier and more continental than the wet west-slope forests just across the crest. Ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, grand fir, and western larch dominate the closed-canopy forests; sagebrush-steppe and pinyon-juniper fill the eastern lower-elevation transition into the Columbia Plateau. Fire is a central ecological process here, and fire-suppression-driven fuel accumulation is well-documented.
