The Pontic steppe is a vast temperate grassland ecoregion of the western Palearctic, sweeping across six nations from the northeastern corner of Bulgaria through southeastern Romania, Moldova, southern and eastern Ukraine, southern Russia, and into northwestern Kazakhstan, with its southern edges reaching the shores of the Black and Caspian Seas. Its open plains are dominated by feather grasses (Stipa) and fescues, peppered with sages and a flush of colorful spring ephemerals, while the Danube Delta along its margin holds the world's widest area of compact reeds. The climate is temperate with appreciable winter rainfall. This is one of Europe's most imperiled landscapes: steppe flora has been destroyed more than any other type of zonal vegetation in Europe, with widespread conversion to cropland the primary threat, and the ecoregion shelters species such as the critically endangered European mink and the saiga antelope. For gardeners, the steppe is home to ornamental natives including the wild tulip Tulipa suaveolens and the fern-leaf steppe peony (Paeonia tenuifolia) that blooms among the grasses.
