Sayan alpine meadows and tundra
RESOLVE 764
The Sayan alpine meadows and tundra ecoregion crowns the high Sayan Mountains above the treeline, stretching across southern Russia between the Altai Mountains and Lake Baikal and reaching into the peaks of northern Mongolia, including Mönkh Saridag on the Russia-Mongolia border. Glacially carved valleys hold an upland mosaic of alpine meadows, tundra, and bare rock at the highest elevations, with characteristic flora such as golden rhododendron alongside endemics like Saussurea dorogostaiskii. The climate is subalpine and severe (Köppen Dfc), marked by large seasonal temperature swings, long cold winters, and short cool summers. The tundra and rocky landscape form the northernmost stronghold of the snow leopard, which preys principally on Siberian ibex and argali sheep. For gardeners, the region's native golden rhododendron is a hardy alpine plant adapted to these harsh montane conditions.
About the montane grasslands & shrublands biome
High-elevation grasslands, meadows, and shrublands above the treeline or in mountain basins, including alpine and páramo systems. Cool temperatures, intense sunlight, and specialized, often endemic flora characterize them.
