Northwestern Himalayan alpine shrub and meadows
RESOLVE 760
The Northwestern Himalayan alpine shrub and meadows ecoregion occupies the high elevations of the northwestern Himalaya across India, Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan, including parts of the Indian regions of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir and the Pakistani territories of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit Baltistan. Above the timberline its vegetation is dominated by krummholz and herbaceous meadows, with stunted, wind-twisted rhododendron and juniper scrub mixed with birch, while scree slopes host cushion-forming genera such as Caragana, Saxifraga, and Draba. The climate is harsh and continental, with freezing, snow-laden winters and short summers that receive relatively little monsoon rainfall, leaving north-facing slopes moister than south-facing ones. The ecoregion remains comparatively well preserved thanks to its high elevation, difficult climate, and lack of commercial timber, and it provides prime habitat for snow leopard and Tibetan wolf along with mountain ungulates like ibex, markhor, and blue sheep. For gardeners, it is the native ground of many prized alpine ornamentals, including Meconopsis, Primula, Gentiana, Delphinium, and Anemone.
About the montane grasslands & shrublands biome
High-elevation grasslands, meadows, and shrublands above the treeline or in mountain basins, including alpine and páramo systems. Cool temperatures, intense sunlight, and specialized, often endemic flora characterize them.
