The Huang He Plain mixed forests ecoregion blankets the North China Plain, a vast, flat alluvial landscape lying entirely within China along the lower Yellow River and widening eastward toward the Yellow Sea coast, with the plain averaging only about 50 meters in elevation. Its potential natural vegetation is a mix of broadleaved deciduous forest and evergreen conifers, with characteristic genera including oak, elm, Chinese pistache, and Chinese red pine, while the Shandong Peninsula adds Mongolian oak, hazel, and linden. The climate is humid continental with hot summers and dry, cold winters (Koppen Dwa), bringing large seasonal temperature swings and monsoon-driven summer rain. Conservation here is severe: home to roughly 190 million people and converted overwhelmingly to agriculture, only about 15 percent of the ecoregion remains in a natural state, and the fragmented mountain forests still shelter the rare North China (Amur) leopard. For gardeners, the region is also home to ancient groves of Platycladus cypress, a hardy ornamental conifer native to these slopes.
