The Davis Highlands tundra spans the rugged Baffin Mountains along the eastern coast of Baffin Island and Bylot Island in Nunavut, Canada, where heavily glaciated peaks rise to over 2,000 meters above deep fjords facing Baffin Bay. Its polar-maritime climate is cold but moister than the Canadian High Arctic, averaging roughly -11.5°C annually with 200–600 mm of precipitation. Sparse, patchy vegetation of mosses, lichens, sedges, and dwarf shrubs such as dwarf birch clings to the terrain. Bylot Island hosts one of the world's largest breeding colonies of greater snow goose; the ecoregion remains about 85% intact, with Auyuittuq and Sirmilik National Parks among its protected areas.

About the tundra biome

Treeless polar and high-mountain landscapes of low shrubs, sedges, mosses, and lichens, where cold and a short growing season cap plant height. Soils are frequently frozen as permafrost, and these systems recover only slowly from disturbance.
