Un légume de saison chaude produisant des cultivars doux (poivron), forts (cayenne, jalapeño), pour paprika et ornementaux, tous issus d'une seule espèce — la teneur en capsaïcine varie considérablement selon les cultivars tandis que la plante elle-même reste uniforme dans son port (annuelle chaude compacte et buissonnante). NC State documente les oiseaux insensibles à la capsaïcine comme consommateurs opportunistes de fruits ; autofertile avec possibilité de pollinisation croisée par les abeilles pour améliorer la nouaison.
