Una hortaliza de estación cálida que produce cultivares dulces tipo morrón, picantes tipo cayena, jalapeño, pimentón y ornamentales —todos de una sola especie—; el contenido en capsaicina varía enormemente entre cultivares mientras que el hábito de la planta se mantiene uniforme (anual cálida compacta y redondeada). NC State documenta que las aves inmunes a la capsaicina son consumidoras oportunistas de los frutos; autopolinizante con polinización cruzada opcional por abejas que aumenta el cuajado.
