A mariposa-io é uma mariposa-de-seda gigante (família Saturniidae) cujos adultos exibem grandes manchas oculares escuras nas asas posteriores, usadas em uma exibição defensiva de sobressalto. Suas larvas são altamente polífagas, alimentando-se da folhagem de dezenas de plantas lenhosas e herbáceas de muitos gêneros. Manuseie as lagartas com cuidado: as larvas verde-vivas são cobertas por espinhos urticantes ramificados que provocam uma ferroada dolorosa ao contato. Os adultos não se alimentam e vivem apenas para acasalar, de modo que o impacto da espécie no jardim se restringe inteiramente ao estágio larval de alimentação foliar.
