Lifecycle

Planting

Plant in spring or autumn in average, moist but well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. It is not fussy about fertility and accepts a range of soils as long as drainage is good. Space about 18 inches apart, allowing room for the airy mound of foliage and the taller flower stems.

Transplanting

Move young self-sown seedlings while small; the deep taproot of an established plant resents disturbance, so transplant in the first year or sow where the plants are to grow.

Early growth

Keep the soil evenly moist through the first growing season while the clump establishes. First-year plants make a low ferny rosette and may bloom only lightly; flowering builds in the second year.

Maturity

Mature plants reach 18-36 inches tall in late spring with nodding spurred flowers above the foliage. Each plant is fairly short-lived — typically a few years — so the planting persists by self-sowing rather than by the longevity of any one clump. Deadhead before seed set if you want to keep colours and forms under control.

Propagation

Grow from seed; it self-sows freely and seedlings reach flowering size in their second year. Because the plant hybridises readily, seed-grown plants rarely match a named parent — for a true form, deadhead to prevent crossing and buy or divide named stock.

The long-spurred late-spring flowers favour long-tongued visitors — bumblebees and long-tongued bees that can reach the nectar at the spur tips, and hawkmoths at dusk; shorter-tongued bees often nectar-rob through the spur. It hybridises freely between plants, which is why seedlings show such varied colour.

Every part is toxic if eaten, with the seeds and roots the most poisonous; Aquilegia contains cyanogenic compounds and other irritant constituents. Ingestion can cause gastrointestinal upset, and historic medicinal use is considered unsafe. Treat it as decorative only — do not eat any part, and keep the seed heads away from children and pets.
