Une légumineuse annuelle de saison froide dans la famille des Fabaceae, également appelée fève des marais, cultivée comme légume pour ses graines et gousses comestibles. NC State Extension décrit une plante rigidement dressée de 2-6 feet de hauteur avec des feuilles à 2-6 folioles et des stipules dentées bien visibles, portant des fleurs printanières et estivales blanches parfumées marquées d'une tache violet ou brun. Le fruit est une gousse aplatie étroitement oblongue pouvant atteindre 11 inches de long contenant jusqu'à 6 grandes graines ovales. Comme d'autres légumineuses, elle fixe l'azote atmosphérique et est souvent utilisée comme engrais vert ; elle se développe mieux par temps frais, avec des rendements qui chutent une fois que les températures diurnes dépassent les 75°F environ.
