Une fougère indigène spectaculaire en forme de vase, aux grandes frondes stériles dressées (évoquant des plumes d'autruche — d'où son nom) et aux frondes fertiles contrastées, brun persistant en hiver. La source traditionnelle de crosses comestibles — les jeunes frondes enroulées récoltées tôt au printemps sont vendues saisonnièrement comme mets délicat. Se répand vigoureusement par rhizomes dans les sols humides ; offre une belle présence en couvre-sol.
