Un grand arbre persistant de la plaine côtière du sud-est des États-Unis aux épaisses feuilles oblongues et luisantes (à revers roux), aux immenses fleurs (8 à 12 inches) en coupe crémeuse et parfumée du printemps tardif jusqu'en été, et aux cônes fruités caractéristiques portant des graines rouge vif en automne. Pollinisé par les coléoptères — le genre Magnolia a évolué avant l'apparition des abeilles et conserve ce mode de pollinisation ancestral documenté par NC State. Les chutes de feuilles toute l'année et l'ombre dense du couvert ne laissent quasiment rien pousser dessous ; ne le plantez qu'en acceptant cette contrainte.
