Un Allium bisannuel cultivé comme annuel pour son bulbe. Sensible à la photopériode — les jardins du nord ont besoin de cultivars à jours longs ; les jardins du sud ont besoin de cultivars à jours courts ; les cultivars à jours intermédiaires conviennent aux zones 6-7. Planté au printemps (caïeux) ou à l'automne (hivernage) ; récolté en été lorsque les fanes se couchent. Consommable comme légume vert à n'importe quel stade (oignons verts / ciboules).
