Una hortaliza anual de estación cálida de la familia de las solanáceas, cultivada por su fruto fresco de verano. Los tomates necesitan pleno sol, humedad constante, suelo ligeramente ácido y temperaturas nocturnas superiores a 50°F. Los frutos más grandes, como los de tipo beefsteak, pueden tener dificultades durante los veranos calurosos del sur porque las flores caen sin cuajar.
