Abelha nativa solitária que nidifica no solo e é especializada no pólen de Cucurbita (abóbora, abóbora-moranga, cabaça) — a polinizadora canônica e mais relevante para o cultivo de cucurbitáceas na horta. Ativa ao amanhecer, antes das abelhas-do-mel e das mamangavas, a abelha-da-abóbora é responsável pela maior parte da polinização das cucurbitáceas em toda a América do Norte. Os machos dormem dentro das flores de abóbora fechadas; as fêmeas forrageiam exclusivamente o pólen de Cucurbita durante a curta janela de voo de verão da espécie. O ciclo de vida é sincronizado com a floração das cucurbitáceas — os adultos emergem em pleno verão, quando as flores de abóbora se abrem, e morrem em poucas semanas.

The monoecious yellow cucurbit flowers need insect pollination to set fruit, and squash bees and other bees forage them; NC State Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox lists Cucumis melo as attracting bees and pollinators. Squash bees are cucurbit-flower foragers, so they are a plausible (not source-named) visitor of melon flowers.
Native squash bees (specialists on the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae) are efficient pollen vectors for cucurbit crops including watermelon, which depends on bee visitation to set fruit.
