Grand arbuste à feuillage persistant, arrondi et à tiges multiples, propre aux Appalaches méridionales — atteignant généralement 6-10 feet de hauteur (rarement jusqu'à 20), avec des feuilles vert foncé luisantes et de spectaculaires corymbes terminaux compacts de 15-20 fleurs en entonnoir rose lavande au printemps moyen à tardif. Indigène de la Virginie au Kentucky, jusqu'en Géorgie et en Alabama, où il forme des fourrés denses sur les pentes rocheuses et les crêtes d'altitude. Préfère les étés frais, un sol acide humide mais bien drainé et une ombre partielle ; toutes ses parties sont hautement toxiques si ingérées.
