Un cerisier indigène drageonnant à port touffu, qui se présente comme un grand arbuste ou un petit arbre dans la majeure partie de l'Amérique du Nord. De parfumées fleurs blanches s'ouvrent en racèmes allongés et retombants au printemps, suivies de denses grappes pendantes de cerises de la taille d'un pois qui mûrissent du rouge au pourpre-noir foncé à la fin de l'été. Le fruit astringent est techniquement comestible après transformation, et la plante est un véritable pilier pour la faune sauvage — nourrissant oiseaux et mammifères, et servant de plante hôte pour les chenilles de sphinx.
