Paeonia lactiflora
La classique pivoine de jardin commune (ou pivoine de Chine) — une vivace herbacée dressée en touffes, originaire de Chine, du Tibet et de Sibérie, qui s'élève à 1.5 à 2.5 feet sur des tiges rougeâtres garnies de feuilles lustrées, profondément découpées, vert foncé. En mai, elle ouvre de grandes fleurs en coupe à bol, blanches, roses ou cramoisies, autour d'un groupe apparent d'étamines jaunes ; la plupart des cultivars sont parfumés et excellents pour la coupe. Longévive et peu exigeante, une seule plantation a besoin d'un hiver froid pour fleurir et peut rester en place pendant des décennies.
