Une vivace herbacée rhizomateuse et dressée de la famille des Lamiacées, cultivée le plus souvent comme herbe culinaire ou médicinale et comme couvre-sol. Hybride naturel de menthe aquatique (Mentha aquatica) et de menthe verte (Mentha spicata), elle porte des feuilles aromatiques arrondies à lancéolées, dentées, sur des tiges carrées, et de beaux épis de fleurs roses au milieu et à la fin de l'été. Originaire d'Europe, elle se propage agressivement par rhizomes pour former un couvre-sol attrayant et produit rarement des graines, aussi se multiplie-t-elle végétativement et doit de préférence être contenue par une barrière racinaire (Missouri Botanical Garden PlantFinder).
