Sassafras albidum
Árbol mediano nativo de los bordes de bosque y campos abandonados del este de América del Norte, con tres formas foliares distintas en la misma planta (ovalada sin lóbulos, en forma de manopla y trilobulada) y brillante coloración otoñal en rojo, naranja y amarillo. Dioico: solo los árboles femeninos producen las drupas azules en cúpulas escarlatas que alimentan a las aves canoras migratorias. Huésped larvario secundario de la mariposa coleta del laurel (después del espicebush propiamente) y de la mariposa Palamedes. Las raíces aromáticas fueron históricamente la fuente del té de sassafras y del aroma de la cerveza de raíz; su uso comercial en alimentos está restringido desde la década de 1970 debido al safrol, un carcinógeno débil.
