Phaseolus vulgaris
Hortaliza anual de temporada cálida de la familia Fabaceae (fijadora de nitrógeno) que produce vainas verdes comestibles (ejotes), granos tiernos o frijoles secos según el cultivar y el momento de la cosecha. Existen dos grupos de porte: frijoles arbustivos (compactos, de 1-2 ft) y frijoles de enredadera (trepadoras de hasta 8 ft). NC State Extension destaca expresamente el papel de la fijación de nitrógeno en la mejora del suelo: los frijoles son un cultivo de rotación fundamental.
