Arbusto caducifolio grande, espinoso y con renuevos, propio de las costas y dunas de Eurasia, apreciado por su follaje plateado-verdoso similar al del sauce y por sus bayas anaranjadas persistentes que se aferran a las plantas femeninas durante el otoño e invierno. El fruto es comestible y rico en vitaminas, y se utiliza comercialmente para elaborar tés, mermeladas y bebidas. Dioico y polinizado por el viento: se requiere un macho cercano para que las plantas femeninas fructifiquen, y es lo suficientemente resistente para fijar suelos arenosos, expuestos y susceptibles a la erosión.
