Enredadera anual de estación cálida cultivada por sus frutos crujientes y verdes que se consumen crudos o en conserva: los tipos para rebanar (de piel larga y lisa) y los tipos para encurtir (de piel corta y rugosa) se diferencian por la selección del cultivar, no por la biología de la especie. Monoica y dependiente de las abejas para la fructificación (excepto los cultivares partenocárpicos de semilla sin fertilizar). NC State señala explícitamente a los escarabajos del pepino como la plaga principal: estos transmiten la marchitez bacteriana (Erwinia tracheiphila), que es la enfermedad clásica que mata al pepino.
